To those who perform cosmetic dentistry, how do I introduce the concept of veneers to patients?

Main Post:

Basically the title, I’m a new grad (2023), and I know, I know, I sound just like every new dentist who wants to do cosmetic cases but I was just wondering how its brought up. I still feel like I’m earning peoples trust, I’m a people person and patients seem to like me, but I don’t know how to bring the topic up because I want people to think I’m genuine. As it is still my first time meeting many patients I don’t want my first impressions being pushy, as I’ve heard plenty of people say they think of dentists as scam artists or money hungry and I would never want that to be how anyone feels. I’ve always been interested in the artistic side of dentistry and cosmetics, but as if right now I just don’t feel confident enough to discuss it and moreover I’m not even sure how to bring it up. I took the aesthetic advantage course which I understand some of you guys don’t like that crowd, but I felt it educated me a lot on the process and what to look for. Any advice would be helpful, thanks docs!

Top Comment: I stopped doing sales pitches for that kind of stuff years ago. Most people don't want it, and I don't want to talk about it. I keep a book of services I offer with some before and after photography of some of my cases in the waiting room. The smile design case I used is a severe fluorosis case. Really great before and afters. A lot of people will ask questions about one procedure or another that caught their eye when I finish my appointment with the old "Are there any questions or concerns you wanted to discuss that we haven't had the chance to yet?" May not be the best advice since I only do a case like that 4 or 5 times a year, but that's my approach.

Cosmetic vs. General Dentistry

Main Post: Cosmetic vs. General Dentistry

Top Comment: Cosmetic dentists are general dentists. There's no speciality of cosmetic dentistry, but dentists who are particularly interested in or good at smile makeovers will advertise themselves as cosmetic dentists to appeal to patients that are interested in these services. There will always be predatory dentists in the world but I wouldn't think anyone advertising cosmetic services would be any more or less prefatory than average. Best bet is to follow word of mouth recommendations to find a great dentist.

Which cosmetic dentist(s), if any, would you get to do your veneers?

I’ll go first: Dr. Apa

Top Comment: Apa? ROFL. Dude is over-rated AF. My honest choices would be Strupp, Chasolen, or Ochi. Just because Apa charges 5k per unit doesn’t mean he is good.

Does anyone else hate purely cosmetic cases ?

Main Post:

To elaborate, the cosmetic cases I'm referring to is purely cosmetics. No decay, chip, fracture, or worn teeth. Patient's esthetics is probably 90+ and wants to get to 100. These are often veneers, but can be composite bonding also. I personally hate them and I feel like it's taboo to say this in dentistry because cosmetic work is very profitable and dentistry is supposed to be artistic and cosmetic work is artistic.

I love restoring a broken tooth, restoring function, restoring caries, getting people out of pain. I do a fair amount of composite bonding for anterior teeth and the ones I enjoy are the ones where people broke off a corner of a front tooth or a peg lateral or diastemma, something where I can clearly see the improvements needed. I know this sounds like I'm terrible at it, but I actually do fairly well with them. The purely cosmetic cases always get me super stressed. Anyone else doesn't enjoy them ?

Top Comment: Not my cup of tea. Those patients tend to be very exacting and it’s never perfect.

Ladies - where are we going for cosmetic dentistry? The goal is to avoid looking like a horse

Main Post:

Hiya - looking to do a consultation with a dentist for some cosmetic work and searching for someone who focuses on a very natural and minimal look...unlike what I see in the mouths of a lot of influencers and celebrities these days. Not necessarily looking for veneers, maybe just some bonding but tbd!

Thanks so much in advance 🩷🩷

DO NOT get veneers. You will have to file down your teeth and replace them every few years. They are an ongoing cost, and hard upkeep. I recommend Dr. Marc Beshar in Columbus Circle (I want to say 60th and 10th). He is an incredible dentist who specializes in cosmetics, and he's just a great guy.

I was lucky enough to find him when I first moved to the city, purely because he was on my insurance, and he's been a godsend. My permanent retainer popped a bracket off, I panicked and rushed to an orthodontist, who was going to charge me $500 for a whole new set of retainers. Out of terror, I called up Dr. Beshar, who had no reason to take that call-- I wasn't paying for it-- and he immediately counseled me out of it, told me the bracket that popped off wasn't structurally important, and that he would keep a close eye for movement and fix anything he saw. His exact words were, "I have two daughters your age and wouldn't want anyone to scam them like this."

Who do you recommend for a cosmetic dentist?

Main Post:

My two front teeth got a bad bump 20+ years ago. One died almost immediately and is fake. The other recently died a more peaceful death but is turning a horrible dead-brown color. The brown tooth is fully functional and I don't need to do anything about it, but grows uglier by the week and I simply can't live like this.

What makes a cosmetic dentist such?

Main Post:

I’m a dental student really interested in cosmetics but unsure of how to pursue such out of school when there isn’t a residency program per say. Any advice?

Top Comment: Because it's not a real specialty, I could call myself a cosmetic dentists tomorrow. My advice: don't.

Looking for a cosmetic dentist in the area that does the best bonding or veneers in Scottsdale or Phoenix. Leaning towards bonding bc of price but interested in both.
